The Drama Theater named after M. N. Ermolova is one of the most famous and beloved by theatergoers of the capital's churches of Melpomene. It occupies an old mansion located on Tverskaya Street. It was named in honor of Maria Ermolova, a Russian actress, whose name is inscribed in golden letters in the theatrical chronicle of Russia. Her stage talent left no spectator indifferent. Therefore, it is not surprising that during the actress’s lifetime the theater began to bear her name. And in the 21st century, Ermolova’s theater not only retained its name, but also continues to delight the public with brilliant performances. Today in its foyer you can see an artistic portrait of the legendary actress by V. Serov. It will certainly be seen by all spectators who can buy tickets to the Ermolova Theater.

How it all began

The history of this establishment goes back to 1925. It was then that it was organized by talented young actors who had just graduated from the studio at the Maly Theater. The mobile theater was directed by N. Kostromskaya, E. Leshkovskaya, and S. Aidarov. And almost immediately Ermolova’s theater won the love of the audience. The performances “Cunning and Love”, “Frasquita”, “Leon Couturier” were highly appreciated by the public.

In the thirties it was headed by Max Tereshkovich. It was he who invited the brilliant Maria Knebel to join the troupe, with whose name the glorious pages of the history of the M.N. Drama Theater are associated. Ermolova.

War and post-war years

During the difficult war years, the team left the capital, moving first to Makhachkala, then to Cheremkhovo. Later he settled in the Moscow region. At that time, the Ermolova Theater’s playbill included patriotic performances:

  • "A guy from our city";
  • "Russian people";
  • “Our correspondent”, etc.

In the fifties, the repertoire of Ermolova’s theater was distinguished by its originality, intelligence, and had its own creative face.

Vampilov staged by the Ermolovites. Split

In the seventies, productions based on the plays of Alexander Vampilov were very popular there. It was the Yermolovites who discovered for their viewers, and for all admirers of dramatic art, one of the most extraordinary playwrights of the second half of the 20th century. Many theatergoers sought to buy tickets to performances based on his works. The performances “The Eldest Son”, “Duck Hunt” and others staged at the Ermolova Theater are still remembered with nostalgia by older generation viewers. At that time, the main director of the Ermolova Theater was Vladimir Andreev.

In the eighties it was headed by Valery Fokin. At this time, a whole galaxy of talented actors appeared: Tatyana Dogileva, Oleg Menshikov, Victor Proskurin and many others.

It so happened that in the nineties the troupe was divided into two groups, which a few years later united again. The conflict was resolved. The main director Vladimir Andreev returned, updating the theatrical repertoire.

Today

In 2012, the famous Russian actor and director Oleg Menshikov became artistic director. With his arrival, dramatic changes occurred in repertoire policy. Now in the Ermolova Theater playbill you can see both classical performances based on the works of domestic and foreign authors, and modern, innovative productions.

On 03/25/19 I watched the play “Hamlet” with Alexander Petrov at the Theater named after. Ermolova (Tverskaya st., 5/6). The ticket price is 3,000 rubles. I didn’t like the performance and here’s why.
Director Valery Sarkisov made Hamlet a teenager with appropriate actions and antics.
The director also decided that Hamlet is a comedy. The characters joked in the manner of KVN participants, the audience laughed. Anton Kolesnikov, who played small roles: an actor and a gravedigger, especially tried. He turned his speeches into buffoonery.
The artists played at a weak level. Without emotions - Claudius by Boris Mironov. The actor portrayed the regicide as a mediocre bandit. And in terms of emotions - the Terminator. Where is the suffering, the tossing, the conspiracies?
Tatyana Argunova - Gertrude. The actress is well over 70 and Hamlet’s monologue about maternal lust looked more than inappropriate. The actress is similar in age not to Hamlet's mother, but to her grandmother. Argunova portrayed a lost woman who, without reasoning, recognized her son as crazy in order to somehow justify her presence on stage. It looked clumsy.
Sergei Badichkin’s Polonium reminded me of the mathematics teacher from “Electronics” played by Evgeniy Vesnik. Remember this character? He's still an intriguer.
Tolstoganova's Ophelia is raw, unconvincing, with some hints of incest. (She hugged her brother too passionately, when she was cold towards Hamlet). The actress lacks experience and you can feel it. The same goes for Sergei Kempo’s Laertes, Andrei Popov’s Rosencrantz, Pavel Galich’s Guildenstern and other young actors who spoke and moved like cardboard, without emotion, interest, or soul. It felt like they were simply reading out a text that they had faithfully memorized.
Sasha Petrov, of course, is magically charming with a Gagarin smile. How fashionable it is now to say “with a hypnotic gaze and an actor’s extrasensory perception.” Talented actor. I really like his work in the film "T-34" and the series "Embracing the Sky." Perhaps in this performance it is not the actor’s fault that the director saw Hamlet as a teenager. But Sasha tried.
Not everything worked out.
The frequent smile on the face of the “suffering Hamlet” was surprising. It did not fit with the tragedy.
Plus, the artist Petrov for some reason adopted the manner of speaking like the artistic director of the theater Oleg Menshov. Swallow endings, make hard consonants soft, timbre, voice, very similar. This is puzzling. During his monologues, Hamlet-Petrov often swallowed the endings, making it unclear what he was talking about. The viewer did not really hear the famous: “To be or not to be.” At that moment Sasha was hugging Tolstoganova - Ophelia, and spoke in a patter.
In total, the “Yermolovites” did not have a tragedy. No depth, no scale, no feelings. I left the theater with a smile, like after a walk-through comedy movie: I laughed and forgot.
Therefore, I recommend to all fans of Shakespeare’s plays the black and white two-part film “Hamlet” of 1964 with Innokenty Smoktunovsky in the role of Hamlet. Get acquainted with a real, deep classic.
What did you like about the performance?
Nice stage decoration. Visually interesting and concise. I was captivated by the musical accompaniment - a real brass band! Unexpected and pleasant! The musicians played bagpipes, horns, and wind instruments. What created the atmosphere of Medieval Denmark. Beautiful, solemn, respectful for the viewer.
A special grand merci goes to the costume designer - Andrey Klimov. The costumes are impressively beautiful. On the verge of modernity and the Middle Ages. Very organic.
