Castiel

Castiel(English) Castiel listen)) is a fictional character in the American mystery television series "Supernatural" produced by Warner Brothers and performed by Misha Collins. Angel first appeared in the first episode of the fourth season, and the character was used to introduce the theme of Christian mythology into the series' story. According to the plot, Castiel returns Dean Winchester straight from hell, after which he helps Dean and his brother Sam in the fight against various demons and angels. Being an angel, he has a number of supernatural abilities, including the ability to kill demons with one touch. At first, the character shows almost no emotion.

Unlike the stereotypical image of an angel on television, Castiel does not always help people, and he can also kill an innocent person if necessary. Collins originally auditioned for the role of a demon in the series, as Eric Kripke did not want fans to know about the introduction of angels into the series. The actor prepared for the role by reading the book of Revelation, and based the character on his younger brother. In response to positive reviews of the character, the series' creators expanded his role, making him one of the main characters of the series in the fifth and sixth seasons.

History of the character in the series

Angels

According to the mythology of the series, a person is not given the opportunity to hear the true voice and see the true appearance of an angel. Trying to look at an angel results in a person’s eyes being burned out; the angel’s voice has destructive power, so a person’s eardrums simply cannot withstand it. However, there are a select few who are able to see the angel and hear his voice. To communicate with ordinary people, an angel must inhabit a person (“vessel”). Each angel has its own vessel. An angel can enter a person (“vessel”) only with the permission of the chosen one. If an angel inhabits a person who is not the intended angel, the person's body will burn.

Jimmy Novak

Jimmy Novak is an ordinary, unremarkable family man and devout Christian. He has a wife and daughter. But one day he hears someone talking to him, and it turns out that this is a real angel from heaven, whose name is Castiel. One day an angel asks him to prove his faith by immersing his hand in boiling water. Amelie, Jimmy's wife, does not believe in his communication with the angel, and says that he needs the help of a psychiatrist. Amelie gives an ultimatum: either Jimmy gets treatment or she takes her daughter with her and leaves. Novak doesn't know what to do, so he prays to the angel. Jimmy agrees to become Castiel's vessel on the condition that he protects his family.

After Jimmy becomes Castiel's vessel, he leaves his family for a year and only returns to them in the episode "Ascension". However, he and his family are eventually found by demons, putting everyone in great danger. Jimmy himself is shot by his possessed wife, but it all ends with him once again becoming a container, instead of his daughter Claire.

Castiel

At the beginning of season 4, Castiel rescues Dean Winchester from Hell, according to Castiel himself, on a personal order from God. There was a burn on Dean's shoulder in the shape of Castiel's handprint.

In the sixth season in episode 6.03 “The Third Man,” Castiel returns again, helping the brothers in the fight against the demon Crowley and all kinds of monsters. After the imprisonment of Michael and Lucifer in Paradise, a civil war begins between supporters of the beginning of the Apocalypse, led by the archangel Raphael, and angels who want to stop the possibility of a new Apocalypse, led by Castiel. In the same episode, it turns out that a certain angel Balthazar stole sacred artifacts of angels like the staff of Moses and is now distributing them to people to carry out his selfish plans. Later, Castiel finds out that Sam, having escaped from Lucifer's cage, “forgot” his soul there. Dean tries to make every effort to get her back, but Castiel begins to dissuade him.

As the plot develops, the figure of Castiel in season 6 becomes more and more mysterious. It turns out that he is directing the actions of Balthazar and he is connected with some kind of conspiracy with the demon Crowley. Castiel also takes all possible measures to obtain the souls of people, who, according to him, have enormous power. So, in episode 6.17 “My Heart Will Continue to Beat,” he orders Balthazar to go back in time and save the Titanic in order to subsequently obtain the souls of everyone who was on the ship saved from sinking, but the operation fails. Makes a deal with Crowley, according to which he gets half of all the souls in purgatory. In episode 6.22. "The Man Who Knew Too Much" kills Balthazar, who betrayed him. Deceives Crowley, preventing him from getting souls from purgatory.

At the end of the sixth season, he believes that he has become God, having obtained all the souls from purgatory. At the beginning of the seventh season, he tries to be God, but finds out that ancient monsters of purgatory are also hiding inside him. While he is punishing all over the world who, in his opinion, desecrates the name of God, his shell begins to collapse, becoming covered with burns and blisters. At a certain moment, leviathans, the most terrible creatures of purgatory, absorbed by Castiel, seize control of his body and carry out a massacre in the television center. Waking up among the bloody corpses, Cas finally realizes that he has gone too far and he cannot cope with all the creatures that are contained within him. He turns to the Winchester brothers for help to help him return all the souls to purgatory. Together they perform the ritual and reopen the gates to purgatory. A greatly weakened Castiel releases all the souls from himself, and they return to their proper place. He comes to his senses and his shell is restored. He expresses words of repentance to the Winchesters and says that he would like to atone.

But suddenly he tells them to run away - it turns out that the leviathans have not left his body. Cas tries with all his might to resist them, but in vain - they take over his body. The Leviathans say that Castiel has died, although according to Uriel, "Only an angel can kill an angel," and they are now free. However, even filled only with leviathans, Castiel's shell cannot stand it and begins to die again. Realizing this, the Leviathans head to the nearest reservoir and are released there, spreading throughout the entire water supply. Only the bloody cloak of Castiel's shell washes ashore.

In episode 17 of season 7, Dean is looking for someone who can help Sam, and one hunter tells him about a certain Emanuel, who showed up a couple of months ago, capable of healing both physical and mental illnesses. This hunter set up all sorts of traps to test the abilities of the “healer,” but Emanuel calmly went through them and actually healed him, restoring his sight. Dean goes to Emanuel and unexpectedly finds a demon there, waiting for the healer to use his power in the fight against the leviathans. However, Dean kills the demon, and at that moment a healer approaches the house. “I saw his face. The real face,” exclaims the frightened Emanuel, and the surprised Dean recognizes him as Cas.

It turns out that Castiel does not remember anything from his past life; he woke up naked by the lake, where he was found by Daphne, who later became his wife. About three months have passed since then. Cas remembers who he is when Meg tells him that he is an angel, and Cas is sent to an entrance surrounded by demons. Castiel gradually remembers his life in battle with demons. Having dealt with the demons and remembering everything that happened to him, the dejected Castiel wants to leave, saying that he is not worthy of life after so many sins, but Dean stops him and pulls out his cloak from the trunk of the car, which is why the angel changes his mind, puts on the cloak and agrees to help Sam.

Cas appears in the hospital next to Sam at the moment when the demon subjects him to electric shock and tries to restore the wall, having first killed the demon, but nothing works - “The wall is destroyed into dust”, and Sam does not recognize him. When Dean asks if there is anything he can do, he says he can only take away Sam's pain. Cas takes Sam's madness for himself, causing him to lose his memory again and gradually go crazy himself. He remains at the clinic, since the Winchesters are unable to take care of him, under the supervision of Meg, who has taken a job there as a nurse. Later, in the last episode of season 7, he was imprisoned with Dean in purgatory.

Character prototype

In Christian mythology there is no angel named Castiel, but in Kabbalistic teaching there is Cassiel, who is the Throne of God and one of the strongest angels. Cassiel is also considered the Angel of Thursday (according to some sources - Saturday). Therefore, some fans see a kind of “Easter egg” in the angel’s name, because on American television until season 6, the series was broadcast on Thursdays.

There is also a mention of an angel with a very similar-sounding name in the book Razim, one of the ancient books of the Talmud period. The ancient text was copied and published in 1966 by Yedioth Ahronot. It lists the names of angels and their distribution across the seven heavens. Castiel lives in the sixth heaven, in the eastern part of this very sky, and this is really a warrior angel, whose help, apparently, can be resorted to during battle.

At first, angels did not exist in the world of Supernatural. And in Providence, Rhode Island in episode 2.13. “Promised Heaven” Sam and Dean Winchester learned this firsthand when they encountered the vengeful but selfless ghost of a deceased priest, Father Gregory, whom Sam mistook for an angel. The Phantom pushed those who yearned for redemption to kill those who committed atrocities and deserved death. This continued until he himself was finally put to rest.

After such an incident, how can you blame the brothers for their skepticism about the existence of angels? This continued until Castiel pulled Dean out of hell, and the Winchesters realized that like this They had never encountered angels before...

Angels

Although modern pop culture portrays angels as beautiful maidens with wings or plump baby cupids, the traditional understanding of angels as described in the Bible and other religious texts is something completely different.

In the Old Testament, angels are not only messengers of the Most High, but also warriors or guards who defeat the enemies of the Lord and bring retribution. According to the texts, they can either have their own free will or simply carry the will of God.

Although angels are often represented in human form, there is evidence that angels do not resemble humans. In the TV series Supernatural, Castiel explained that it is dangerous for a person to look at him in his true form (the medium Pamela lost her eyes when she saw his appearance), and so he had to occupy the body of a godly man in order to communicate with Sam, Dean and everyone else.

In some Roman Catholic texts, angels were associated with the days of the week. So Castiel, for example, is the angel of Thursday.

Traditionally, there are several angelic ranks, each of which has its own responsibilities, capabilities and appearance.

Archangels

Archangels are the highest rank and are most familiar to those who honor Christian traditions.

The names of many angels are not in the Bible, but the names of the four main archangels are known to everyone - these are (the names are given in the more familiar Orthodox version) Gabriel, Michael and Raphael, the name of the latter changed depending on the texts. According to some sources, the last name is Uriel (or Muriel). In the Supernatural universe, Uriel (in Orthodoxy Uriel) submits to Castiel, but whether this means that his rank is lower, we do not yet know.

Other sources, such as the Book of Enoch mentioned in the New Testament, say that there are seven archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Zecharel and Jeremiel. But it seems that Michael, Gabriel and Raphael are the most famous of them.

Seraphim

Next after the archangels in the divine hierarchy are the seraphim. The Book of the Prophet Isaiah says that these creatures emit such a bright light that it is impossible to look at them. Seraphim first appear in the Bible in the Revelations of John the Theologian. They are part of the divine choir and watch over the Throne of God.

Seraphim are often associated with fire, with which they purify and destroy darkness.

Cherubim

The third rank in the divine hierarchy is cherubim. Despite the name, they have nothing in common with plump winged babies (infants are often called cherubs). In the Book of Genesis, the cherubim are represented as angels guarding the left side of the Garden of Eden "with a flaming sword looking in all directions." When talking about cherubs, Uriel is often mentioned, whose name means “Light of God.”

Artists imagine cherubs with the heads of a lion, eagle, bull or man and with four wings. Sometimes these wings are depicted with covered eyes, thereby showing the all-seeing essence of cherubs.

Thrones

Mentioned in the Book of Daniel, these divine beings bear the Throne of God. They are depicted as huge wheels of fire with many eyes. Thrones are usually perceived as guardians of divine energy.

Others

The lower orders include dominions, virtues, powers and principles, each of which has its own role. Some believe that Ephesians says that the devil was once powerful but then fell from grace.

Nephilim

According to the Book of Enoch, some of the fallen angels, the Grirogs, fell in love with earthly women and took them as wives, and from their union children were born - half-angels. Such children were called Nephilim; they were famous for their tall stature, were famous and influential.

A character in the American mystical show "", the angel of the Lord, embodied in the body of a mortal, one of the main characters.

History of creation

When developing the appearance of Castiel, the creators of the series took as a basis the image of an occult detective, the hero of the Hellblazer comic book series, whose role he played in the 2005 film Constantine: Lord of Darkness.

There is no angel with this name in the Bible, but in Kabbalah there is an angel named Castiel, who is called the strongest angel and the Throne of God. Another mention of an angel whose name sounds similar is found in a book of Kabbalah called Sefer Harazim, or Book of Secrets. This book identified Castiel as a warrior angel who was invoked during battle, and named his residence in the eastern part of the sixth heaven.

"Supernatural"

Castiel first appears in the series “Supernatural” in order to help out and return him back to the human world, who was stuck in Hell. Castiel claims that God himself commanded him to go down to Hell for Dean. And a burn formed on Dean's body where the angel touched him. After this, Castiel remains to assist the Winchester brothers in the fight against the demons and angels that have invaded the human world.

Castiel has fantastic abilities that other angels also possess. For example, destroying demons with just one touch. The image of Castiel bears little resemblance to the usual image of a “good” angel. The hero does not strive to help people, at first he is completely devoid of emotions and has poor orientation in the human world, capable of killing, including innocent people. As the story progresses, the character gradually changes. In one of the episodes, you can see Castiel expressively offended by Dean’s remark that without angelic powers, the hero is “like a child in a raincoat.”

Angels in the series are incorporeal entities whose appearance is determined by the body of the mortal into whom the angel inhabits. Mortals are not able to bear the pristine appearance and voice of angels, so heavenly creatures are looking for suitable “vessels” for incarnation. In order to inhabit a human body, an angel must obtain consent. In addition, the person must be “suitable”, otherwise the mortal shell will not survive and will burn. The real name of the man who is possessed by Castiel and in whose guise the viewer observes the angel throughout the series is Jimmy Novak.

Novak is a simple guy with a wife and child, a deeply religious Christian. When Novak begins to hear Castiel's voice, his wife decides that he has gone crazy and demands that Jimmy seek medical help, threatening otherwise to leave and take his daughter. Novak agrees to become a container for Castiel, making the angel promise that he will take care of the family, after which Castiel “seizes control” of Novak’s body for a year. A year later, Jimmy Novak returns and reunites with his family, but this does not last long, as the heroes are found by demons who possess Jimmy's wife. As a result, Jimmy again puts the body at the disposal of the angel.

In some episodes, you can see Castiel with wings that look like a transparent shadow of the corresponding shape behind the hero’s back. However, this bears little resemblance to the usual image of the feathered inhabitant of Heaven.

Thanks to Castiel, the Winchesters were hidden from the eyes of angels and archangels. To do this, the hero applied Enochian symbols directly to the ribs and Dean. In the fifth season, Castiel loses his angelic powers, but travels around the States with the Winchesters and Bobby, helping them solve their usual problems.

Castiel's biography is full of mysterious twists. The hero plays a decisive role in the finale of the fifth season, when, having taken possession of Sam's body, he meets Mikhail in the cemetery in the body of Adam Winchester, John's youngest son. Dean is trying to prevent the archangels from clashing and thus starting a full-scale Apocalypse, but it is not humanly possible to resist these two.

Lucifer from the TV series "Supernatural"

At the last moment, Michael is neutralized by Castiel. The hero suddenly appears with a “projectile” in the form of a bottle of burning holy oil and throws an angelic “Molotov cocktail” at the archangel with a ridiculous cry: “Hey, butt-ass!” Michael temporarily disappears, and an enraged Lucifer “explodes” Castiel’s human shell with a snap of his fingers.

The murdered Castiel is brought back to life by God. The hero receives the familiar appearance of Jimmy Novak, his own angelic powers and a promotion - now Castiel is a seraph. At the end of the season, Castiel goes to Heaven. Since Lucifer and Michael are locked in Hell, anarchy and squabbling for power will begin in Heaven, and Castiel wants to “keep his finger on the pulse.”

In the third episode of the sixth season, the angel returns to help the Winchesters fight against the demon Crowley and other monsters. In Heaven, Castiel leads a party of pacifist angels who want to prevent the Apocalypse, against angels led by Raphael who want "the show to go on."

In the sixth season, Castiel constantly plays a hidden game, conspires with Crowley and collects human souls in order to gain power. In the finale, the hero has all the souls of Purgatory at his disposal. Castiel becomes incredibly powerful, destroys Raphael with one click, and then declares himself the new God.

Castiel in the TV series "Supernatural"

In season seven, it becomes apparent that Castiel has bitten off more than he can chew. Along with human souls, the souls of monsters settle inside it. Castiel's human shell begins to collapse, and the hero himself loses control over it, yielding the “steering wheel” to the leviathan monsters who now live inside him.

With the help of the Winchesters, the angel manages to spew out the “stuffing” from human souls and return them to Purgatory, but the leviathans remain in Castiel’s body. Later, these monsters leave their dying shell and inhabit people. The rest of the seventh season is devoted to the war with the leviathans. And Castiel, whom the Winchesters thought was dead, did not die, but lost his memory.

The hero is discovered later under the name of the healer Emmanuel, who heals any physical and mental ailments. In the finale, Castiel's memory returns, but not for long. In an attempt to save Sam from madness and hallucinations in which Lucifer appears to him, Castiel “takes away” this madness and goes crazy himself. At the end of the season, the Winchesters leave Castiel in a mental hospital.

In the eighth season, Castiel comes to his senses, but finds himself under the control of an angel named Naomi, who uses the hero to observe the Winchesters and receive reports on everything they are doing. Castiel himself does not remember anything about these “denunciations.” At the end of the season, Castiel loses his angelic grace and becomes human, and angels fall from Heaven to Earth. In season nine, these fallen angels are hunting Castiel.

Usually angels hear what is happening in Heaven by connecting to "angel radio", but in season nine Castiel can be seen praying, trying to attract the attention of "their own".

In the eleventh season, Lucifer inhabits Castiel's body and begins to arrange his own affairs, hiding behind Castiel's name. At the end of the twelfth season, Castiel is killed again by Lucifer, and the Winchesters burn the angel's body.

However, at the beginning of the thirteenth season, Jack, the son of Lucifer, calls out to the dead Castiel, and he awakens in a void that appears as an endless black space. Castiel gets out of there and returns to Earth again. In the thirteenth season, Castiel and Lucifer find themselves involved in the situation surrounding Jack, Lucifer's son.

Film adaptations

Castiel has appeared in the series Supernatural since the fourth season, which was released in 2008. Castiel's first appearance occurs in the first episode of this season. Together with Castiel, the writers introduced Christian mythology and related themes and images into the world of Supernatural. Prior to this, the series' universe was based on American urban folklore.

Castiel was originally supposed to remain on the show for only six episodes. However, the character played by the actor took root so well and evoked such enthusiastic responses from fans of the show and the press that in the fifth and sixth seasons he was among the main characters. In the thirteenth season, the character of Misha Collins still remains in the show.

When the web series “Spirit Tamers”, a spin-off of the “Supernatural” project, began to be shown, Castiel appeared there too. “Spirit Tamers” are ten-minute videos depicting documentary footage of “amateur hunters.” The episode with Castiel was released on October 23, 2011.

Quotes

Many of Castiel's phrases are memorable to fans of the show.

“I don't fight anymore. I watch the bees."
- Castiel. Did you just throw a Molotov cocktail with holy fire at my brother?
- You say it’s good, but you don’t look very good.
- This is a human manner. They say they're fine. And even if this is not true, you must agree with me in order to avoid talking about what we cannot change.”

For eleven years in a row, without losing its popularity, the American television channel The CW has been broadcasting a mystical series about two brothers-hunters of evil spirits, Sam and Dean Winchester. For a long time, only these two characters were the main characters, until they had an angelic ally, who was so popular with fans that the creators of the TV show decided to transfer him to the main cast of the Supernatural series. Few people wonder what season Castiel appeared in, because this character has become an important and integral part of the story. And over the course of many seasons, he changed and developed, revealing to the audience the most different traits of his character and his essence.

At the dawn of time

What is the character's backstory on Supernatural? The angel Castiel is absent from official Christian mythology, so his image is the fruit of the creativity of the creators of the series. According to the plot, there is no exact data about the beginning of his angelic path; presumably God created Castiel long before the first people. The show mentions that the hero remembers how the first fish came onto land, he witnessed construction and saw Abel and Cain, but before the events described in the series, he did not descend to Earth.

Vessel for divine essence

In order to introduce Christian themes into the plot, the main ideological inspirer of the project, Eric Kripke, decided to create a new character, an angel named Castiel. Supernatural gives viewers a glimpse of what celestial creatures might look like. According to the mythology of the show, mere mortals are not given the opportunity to see the true face of an angel and hear his voice, for they may lose their hearing and sight. Therefore, there are special people on Earth who can become a temporary container for the celestials; they are called “vessels.” Moreover, for each of the divine creatures there are only a few such specific people, because only a select few can withstand their essence. An angel can enter such a “vessel” only with the consent of the person himself. For Castiel, Jimmy Novak, a devout Christian and an exemplary family man, became such a container. His wife and daughter did not believe that the angel of the Lord himself was talking to the head of the family, and Jimmy agreed to the angel’s possession in exchange for the protection of his family.

Appearance

To maintain intrigue, he did not indicate the real role at the casting, and actor Misha Collins auditioned as a demon. Imagine his surprise when he found out that he would play an angel named Castiel! “Supernatural” is famous for its wonderful casting, so this time the creators of the show did not make a mistake. Amazing blue eyes, slightly slicked dark hair, a distant look and an “out of this world” look - these characteristics of the American actor have won millions of fan hearts around the world. But the signature image of the angel in the form of a light cloak with the same white shirt and a casually tied tie was taken from the comics about John Constantine.

In which episode of Supernatural does Castiel appear?

Viewers first met the new character at the beginning of the fourth season. In the premiere episode, it was this angel who was able to rescue Winchester’s older brother from imprisonment in Hell, leaving a burn in the shape of a palm on the latter’s shoulder. After an unsuccessful attempt to capture the unknown creature that saved Dean, Castiel reveals his essence to him and tells him about the impending liberation of Lucifer. But the wayward Winchester refuses to cooperate with his savior, but they eventually begin to work together. Despite his beliefs in obeying orders from heaven, the angel becomes more humane under Dean's influence. Unlike other divine creatures, Cas (as the elder Winchester likes to call him) believed in Dean's higher destiny and sided with his brothers, helping them fight evil, and opposed Uriel and other higher heavenly creatures.

From minor to major

The angelic character was initially intended by the creators to be temporary, but fans of the series incredibly liked Castiel. “Supernatural” returned to the screens in the fifth season with the heavenly messenger already in the main cast. Because of his rebellion against his fellow heavens, he found himself an exile with dwindling strength and went in search of God. In his searches, he finds only disappointment and becomes even closer to people. Absolutely naive and practically emotionless in the first season, Cas understands human emotions more and more, falls into rage, rejoices, learning new sides of happiness and grief. His unshakable faith in heavenly ideals has failed, and he experiences disappointments and even makes mistakes. In subsequent seasons of the TV series Supernatural, episodes with Castiel are often imbued with moral torment, they are emotionally rich, because Misha Collins perfectly conveys the incredible range of feelings of an angel who has lost hope and regains the meaning of existence.

Character development

Without his best friend and partner Dean Winchester, who is of celestial origin, it is simply impossible to imagine the Supernatural series. When Castiel appears, any episode becomes atmospheric. He fills and complements life and is an absolutely positive character, capable of incredible self-sacrifice. And this is despite some of his mistakes and mistakes, especially in the sixth season, such as a deal with or confidence in his own divinity. These moments became a turning point in the development of the personality of the rebellious angel, because Cas paid doubly for any mistake he made. He tries not to burden Dean and Sam with his problems and tries to cope with them alone, which, however, most often leads to a worsening of the situation. But such is this angel - Castiel. “Supernatural” showed viewers how diverse celestial creatures can be: cunning, insidious, and cruel, but also sincere, kind, sacrificial and naive, like Cas.
