Eatmusic guarantees: the best way to lift your spirits and take a break from your routine is to plan a trip. We are, of course, not a travel agency, but we have some great options for where you can go. There are many such places, especially since 2017 promises to be a hot year for musical events. We decided to compile our top “Best Metal Festivals of 2017”, which will be held this year in Europe - what if some of you, after reading this article, decide to go on a metal festival tour? Or maybe during your already planned trip you will be so tired of sightseeing under the monotonous muttering of the guide that you suddenly decide to break loose and have a blast at one of the most significant events in the world of metal? Well, go ahead!
Where: England, Derby, Donington Park
For whom: The proud successor to the legendary Monsters of Rock festival, which has been held annually since 2003 and attracts more than twenty thousand headbangers, the Download festival is rightfully considered one of the most significant and large-scale events in the field of metal and rock music. Just look at the names of the bands that once performed there: Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Deftones, Metallica, Slayer, Linkin Park, Meshuggah, Guns N’ Roses, The Dillinger Escape Plan and many others. The list is actually very tasty and it can be continued for a very, very long time. You better take a look at who will be there in 2017. System Of A Down, Biffy Clyro and Aerosmith are announced as headliners. There will also be an opportunity to hear a bunch of other cool guys - like Mastodon, Rage Against The Machine, Prophets of Rage, Slayer, Red Fang, Opeth, Clutch - and this is just for starters.
Where: England, London, Camden
For whom: Attention, the composition of the participants of this festival causes profuse salivation and increased sweating among lovers of sludge and stoner. So, Easter eggs of Desertfest 2017: marijuana metal gods Bongzilla, epic doomers Sleep, atmospheric blackers Wolves In The Throne Room and Celeste, merry deathpunks Turbonegro, sludge-doom guys Saint Vitus, brilliant and legendary John Garcia performing with a solo project, and also in his stoner band Slo Burn.
Where: Germany, Wacken
For whom: Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Megadeth, Mayhem, Napalm Death, Status Quo, Orange Goblin, Turbonegro, Crowbar - that's for whom. The festival's motto, "Louder Than Hell," is quite eloquent; I probably can’t say more here. It’s simply impossible to imagine the top “Best Metal Festivals of 2017” without this holiday!
Where: France, Clison
For whom: This year's Hellfest lineup is so epic that it feels like we're in for the triumphant return of good old Monsters of Rock. Already announced are Deep Purple, Slayer, Rob Zombie, Saxon, The Damned, Blue Öyster Cult, Pentagram, Hawkwind... Need more? Okay, how about Apocalyptica, In Flames, Kreator, Primus, The Dillinger Escape Plan and a couple dozen more big names with even bigger sounds?
Where: England, Derbyshire
For whom: In 2017, Amon Amarth and Megadeth are announced as headliners at the UK's largest independent metal festival. You will also be able to hear Hatebreed, Blind Guardian, Annihilator, Obituary, Whitechapel... By the way, last year's Bloodstock was so true-metal that they sold black ice cream there. Nice.
Where: The Netherlands, Tilburg
For whom: The composition is very multifaceted and does not rest on one heavy thing. In addition to Baroness, Deafheaven, Disfear, My Dying Bride, Ulver, Oathbreaker, Chelsea Wolfe, Rome, Dälek, Gnod, Aluk Todolo, Author&Punisher and a bunch more were announced. Such a mixture of cool experimental projects just asks you to take a vacation at the end of April and head to the Netherlands.
Where: Denmark, Copenhagen, Refhaløen
For whom: For old school fans - Overkill, Carcass, Saxon, Candlemass and Rob Zombie. However, there are also plenty of young people at the festival, like Prophets of Rage, Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes. Oh, yes, also System of a Down and Five Finger Death Punch. So shake your beard and shake your antiquity!
Where: Czech Republic, Trutnov
For whom: We all know and love the Czech Republic for one foamy drink - you can come to the festival for that, of course, but in general, judging by the lineup, there will be real trash, intoxication and sodomy. Spanish, Slovak and Greek grindcore, horror rock and classic Californian power violence. Hardcore bands Infest and cult British punks Discharge. And a playground for little metalheads to have a blast too.
Where: Austria, Nikkelsdorf
For whom: Held since 2005, Nova Rock looks like the most “pop” among other festivals – because of Linkin Park, Blink-182, System Of A Down and Green Day. But in general, the list of confirmed bands includes Slayer, Mastodon, Sabaton, Gojira, and, uh... Fatboy Slim, but oh well - in short, for every taste.
Where: Belgium, Dessel
For whom: A perfectly balanced lineup: here you have the classics in the form of Deep Purple, and the eternally young oldies Rammstein and Ministry. Thrashers Suicidal Tendencies. Hardcore guys Comeback Kid and Hatebreed. Fierce blackers Mayhem. Stoners Red Fang and Clutch. Death metal from Gojira. Funny black and rollers Kvelertak. The choice is so good that you don’t even know who to rank among the main favorites.
Where: Slovenia, Tolmin
For whom: The fifth anniversary of Slovenian Metal Days attracts such bands as Bloodbath, Equilibrium, Kadavar, Katatonia, Marilyn Manson, Opeth, Pain, Shining (Norwegian, if that), Krisiun and Sanctuary, as well as such wonderful names as Rectal Smegma and Vasectomy.
Graspop Metal Meeting
Metal Days
Where: Finland, Helsinki, Suvilahti
For whom: Finland is generally known for its love of metal, and in particular for metal festivals, the number of which cannot be counted on one’s fingers (and toes). But Tuska - the largest metal festival not only in Finland, but also in Europe - must be on our list. The lineup has just begun to be formed, so the final lineup will be clear closer to the summer, but it is already known that Suicidal Tendencies, Mayhem, Brujeria, HIM, Electric Wizard, Apocalyptica, Battle Beast and Oranssi Pazuzu will perform.
We are glad that our top “Best Metal Festivals 2017” helped you learn something new and plan your vacation. For those who cannot afford to travel abroad, we remind you that Russian metal festivals will form their lineups in the near future. For lovers of alternative music, we advise you to pay attention to, which will take place on July 5th in Moscow. Already, Twin Atlantic and .
What's summer without a music festival? No, of course, there is always Turkey with All Inclusive hotels or, at a minimum, friends with dried fish and beer on the river bank, but this is definitely not our format. After all, what should you write about on September 1 in your essay “How I spent my summer?” Partyanimal prefers active recreation, which is why we have compiled a calendar of key European music festivals for the summer of 2017. Let's decide!
Where: Barcelona, Spain
Who:!!!, Aphex Twin, Arcade Fire, BADBADNOTGOOD, Bon Iver, Broken Social Scene, Death Grips, Flying Lotus, Frank Ocean, Glass Animals, Grace Jones, King Krule, Mac DeMarco, Metronomy, Preoccupations, Run the Jewels, Saint Etienne , Slayer, Solange, Swans, Van Morrison, Wild Beasts, The xx, The Zombies with the album “Odessey & Oracle” and many others.
The famous city festival, held annually off the coast of the Balearic Sea in Barcelona and opening the festival summer of Europe, has long become a Mecca for hipsters around the world. And even though this time the organizers decided to sedate again and invited metalheads Slayer as headliners, it still looks more modest than in (then, for example, Radiohead and Air were announced). But who knows? Primavera is traditionally a forge of new stars, so it is possible that some of the little-known performers announced this year will, in a few years, collect full houses at the world's most prestigious venues. Vladimir Ivkovic or someone Kokoshca, for example.
How many: Season tickets, alas, are already sold out; a 1-day ticket will cost 80 euros*
Where: Warsaw Poland
Who: Kings of Leon, Justice, Years & Years, Imagine Dragons, Kodaline, Martin Garrix and others
Another city festival, but not in the distant Pyrenees, but in friendly Poland, Orange Warsaw is a much more affordable option. The line-up, of course, is not the brightest, but, in extreme cases, you can always eat it with zhurek and wash it down with a snot. And, in the end, you can be sure that the trip will be budget-friendly, which is important in our busy times. About how it was last year,
How many: two-day pass - 379 zlotys (89 euros)
And here's how it was last year:
Where: Nuerburg, Germany
Who: System of a Down, Rammstein, Liam Gallagher, Die Toten Hosen, Prophets of Rage, In Flames, Bastille, Die Toten Hosen, Slaves, Jake Bugg, Sum 41, Bonaparte, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and others
Twin festivals that take place simultaneously in different locations and have been gathering fans of heavy music for many years. The last two years the Rock Am Ring took place at the former Mendig airfield, this year the festival returns to the Nürburgring, a race track where it has been held since 1985. Rock Im Park will be held parallel to the Zeppelinfield field, which hosted Nazi rallies in the 1930s. Fortunately, all this is in the past, and instead of Hitler and Goebbels, Rammstein and SOAD will rock out.
How many: three-day pass including camping - 210 euros
Where: London, Great Britain
Who: Slowdive, Aphex Twin, Death Grips, HÆLOS, Flying Lotus, Moderat, Nicolas Jaar, Jon Hopkins (DJ-set), Omar Souleyman, Arab Strap, Run the Jewels, Thee Oh Sees and others
A one-day festival in one of the parks of the British capital - taking into account the costs of flights and accommodation, the option is not cheap, but extremely interesting. And all thanks to the lineup of participants - here you have the rising stars of trip-hop HÆLOS, and venerable electronic artists ranging from Aphex Twin to Nicolas Jaar, and the Syrian troubadour Omar Souleyman, and one of the pioneers of shoegaze Slowdive, and many other colorful characters.
How many: three-day pass with camping - 140 euros.
Where: Ostrava, Czech Republic
Who: Jamiroquai, Moderat, Roosevelt, Justice, UNKLE, Thomas Azier, Norah Jones, Digitalism, LP, Benjamin Clementine, Imagine Dragons, alt-J, Birdy, Nouvelle Vague, Michael Kiwanuka and others
An unusual option for the summer is the Czech Ostrava. The festival is good at least because it will be possible to capture the comeback of the famous Jamiroquai with the first studio album in seven years, as well as listen to such a rare guest of the summer musical hodgepodge as Norah Jones or, for example, the sunny French cover ensemble Nouvelle Vague. Well, if you get bored with the lounge, then there is a win-win option -
How many: 4-day pass with camping - 112 euros
Where: Paris, France
Who: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pixies, The Weeknd, Editors, Liam Gallagher, The Roots, Glass Animals, The Hives, Imagine Dragons, LP, alt-J, Lana Del Rey, London Grammar, Tom Odell and others
The cult Lollapalooza, which originated in the USA two and a half decades ago and soon conquered Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Germany through the franchise, finally reached France this year. The festival will take place in the heart of France - Paris - at the Loschamps racecourse on the banks of the Seine. In addition to veterans of RHCP and Pixies, chart hero The Weeknd and languid Lana Del Rey, the organizers promise a solo performance by Liam Gallagher, who still has not lost hope of outdoing his more successful brother.
How many: two-day ticket - 149 euros
Where: Katowice, Poland
Who: PJ Harvey, Swans, Feist, The Black Madonna, Shellac, Daniel Johnston and others
Festival with camping in Katowice, Poland, which, although different genres, positions itself as “non-mainstream”. This year, the festival will feature performances by PJ Harvey, who needs no introduction, honorary experimentalists Swans (who, by the way, will give), the idol of Kurt Cobain, singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston who has suffered from manic depression for half his life, post-hardcore musicians Shellac and other interesting characters.
How many: three-day pass with camping - 90 euros
Where: Gothenburg, Sweden
Who: Frank Ocean, The xx, Pixies, Regina Spektor, Mac DeMarco, Conor Obrest, Feist, Jon Hopkins, Lana Del Rey, Perfume Genius, Sampha, Band of Horses, Major Lazer, Young Thug, The Black Madonna, George Erza and others
A fairly young city festival, which takes place annually in Gothenburg, Sweden. Way Out West takes place in the large Slotskogen Park, which is easily accessible by public transport. There are only three stages at the festival - unfortunately, overlaps are inevitable. The line-up is now at the stage of formation - of the already announced performers, in addition to the obvious stars, one cannot help but mention favorites music critics Perfume Genius, Mac DeMarco and rare festival guest Regina Spektor.
How many: SEK 1440-2240 (EUR 152-237)
Where: Budapest, Hungary
Who: Interpol, PJ Harvey, Kasabian, Pink, The Kills, Metronomy, DJ Shadow, GusGus, Mac DeMarco, Roosevelt, White Lies, Jagwar Ma, Tom Odell, Two Doors Cinema Club, Mando Diao, Rudimental, alt-J, George Erza, The Naked and Famous, The Pretty Reckless, Danny Brown, Jamie Cullum, Flume, Billy Talent, Major Lazer, Bad Religion, Oh Wonder, Paul Van Dyk, Leningrad and many others
The legendary festival, which needs no introduction, is one of the main sources of income for Hungarian tourism. Sziget, which by the way is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is regularly recognized as the best festival in Europe; last year it attracted about half a million people from 95 countries! People go to Liberty Island not so much for the atmosphere, but for the atmosphere, which is truly special here. In addition to the main stages, Sziget has a lot of thematic ones, designed for a specific target audience - for example, metalheads, clubbers, fans of black music, gays, etc. And besides music, you can find almost anything here - from pottery courses and Falun Dafa followers to vibrant theatrical performances and film screenings. The infrastructure at the campsite is well developed - there are storage rooms, telephone recharging stations and all the necessary amenities. The center of Budapest is 20 minutes by train. A cheap supermarket with alcohol is just a stone's throw away. All this makes Sziget one of the best European festivals.
How many: 7-day pass with camping - 299 euros, 5-day - 275 euros, one-day - 65 euros.
Last year it all looked something like this:
Where: Rodatichi, Lviv region, Ukraine
Who: Editors, Breaking Benjamin, In Extremo, Chelsea Grin, Antokha MC, Noize MC, Tartak, O.Torvald, Vivienne Mort and others.
A large-scale Ukrainian festival with camping on the shore of a lake in the picturesque village of Rodatichi near Lviv. This year's Zaxidfest, which usually specializes in heavy acts, will feature performances from reunited American alternative rockers Breaking Benjamin and venerable German folk metallers In Extremo, among others. And yet, perhaps the most titled participant of the fest can be called one of the main post-punk revival bands, the British Editors, on whom a whole generation of indie kids grew up. This summer the team is announced for top European festivals - the more enjoyable it will be.
How many: three-day subscription - 940 hryvnia, one-day ticket - 500 hryvnia, camping - 250 hryvnia.
Where: Paris, France
Who: The xx, PJ Harvey, At the Drive In, Franz Ferdinand, Cypress Hill, The Kills, Mac DeMarcom, Flume, Ty Segall, The Pretty Reckless and others
French festival with camping, which takes place in the Parc Saint-Cloud in the suburbs of Paris. Among other things, Oasis is famous for the sad end - in 2009, the Gallagher brothers, announced at the festival, finally fell out, did not go on stage and announced the dissolution of the group. It’s worth going to the fest this year if only for The xx and PJ Harvey. And, in the end, Rock en Seine is a great way to combine a musical party with walks through one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
How many: three-day pass without camping - 119 euros
Where: Berlin, Germany
Who: Foo Fighters, The xx, Mumford & Sons, Westbam, Metronomy, George Erza, Rudimental, Two Doors Cinema Club, Michael Kiwanuka, The Vaccines, Phantogram, Django Django, London Grammar and others
Another young city festival, which is held under the franchise of its famous American counterpart. Lollapalooza Berlin travels from one point to another every year: the year before the festival took place in the building of the abandoned Tempelchow airport, in the past - in Treptower Park in East Berlin (details), this year it will take place at the Rennbahn Hoppegarten racetrack. A worthy option to close the season!
How many: two-day ticket - 139 euros
What could be better than good music and travel? Only good music while traveling. We have prepared a selection of the most exciting European music festivals in Europe this summer, which you should not miss!

This year the festival program is dominated by the British: PJ Harvey, the Kooks, the Coral, Florence and the Machine.
