Breathing during pop vocal lessons

Correct breathing is the foundation on which you can build a building in any architectural style or build a voice for singing in various musical styles: pop vocals, jazz vocals, classical vocals, etc. If you hear a singer’s strong, spacious voice, then this is not so much natural ability as good breathing. It is these voices that we remember, are able to influence us, and we want to imitate them.

Proper use of a breathing apparatus makes it possible not only to sing long phrases in one breath, but, most importantly, opens up new possibilities for your voice. Using the abdominal muscles and diaphragm during pop singing relieves stress and pressure (tightness) from the throat muscles. Due to this, your throat will never get tired, you will not be able to break your voice, and you will give it the opportunity to develop both up and down equally easily. Voice training and its development in pop vocal lessons

How voice training for pop vocals differs from voice training for other types of singing in our vocal lessons, you can read here. Exercises that develop the voice for pop singing and exercises that prepare the voice for jazz singing or academic vocals are the same. But different types of singing use different sound delivery and different sound production techniques. Without special training in vocal lessons, you will not be able to develop your vocal range and master various vocal techniques. This means that you can sing only the simplest (often primitive) pop songs, provided that the tonality of the song is comfortable for you, the range of the melody is small and the manner of performance is semi-recitative. High-quality pop vocals imply a strong, developed voice of the vocalist with great technical freedom of performance.

Often, at the first stage of pop vocal training, our students, aimed at professional development, practice voice training with our academic vocal teachers. After all, performing on the theater stage, academic singers have to sing without a microphone, accompanied by a large symphony orchestra. In this mode of singing, your voice will withstand the load only if you trained it correctly in classes. Most often, modern pop performers cannot be heard without a microphone at all. Because from the very beginning they are accustomed to singing into a microphone without support, without correct voice production. This is why we recommend that our students sing without a microphone most of the time during pop vocal lessons, in order to properly configure the respiratory-vocal apparatus, so that your voice is not afraid of any stress and any singing conditions. Vocal techniques of singing in pop vocals

The simplest technique in pop singing (as in academic singing) and the most complex at the same time is cantilena (Italian cantilena, from Latin cantilena - singing), which means the most melodious sound, a smooth, even transition from one sound to another. This is a basic technique, something that you begin to practice in your first pop vocal lessons. Only after you have mastered this singing technique can you move on to learning other singing techniques. Cantilena is translated as singing. Singing is precisely the mastery of a smooth and melodious voice.

In modern pop music there are many directions that require mastery of other various singing techniques:

Rap- This is a rhythmic recitative against the background of instrumental accompaniment. The part of the soloist - rapper assumes virtuoso control of the voice within the conversational range. Often the performer's unprofessional approach to recitation leads to the fact that the voice shrinks and the throat begins to hurt. We urge you to take this seriously and learn a different style of recitation, which will completely relieve the strain on your throat. R'n'B (R&B) the music uses soft melodic vocals, derived from the singing style of African Americans. Compared to ordinary pop music, it requires more virtuosic vocal control and greater vocal mobility.

Soul- one of the directions of jazz music. In modern pop music of a calm, measured nature, you can often hear the influence of this jazz style. Soul is based on the blues scale and blues harmonies, hence the vocal techniques - sliding intonations, low scale steps, glissando, etc.

Rock, metal– styles such as death, black, thrash and doom metal, grindcore, deathcore, screamo, emocore, imply mastery of growling and screaming (read on the page Types of singing). With our singing teachers in a pop vocal lesson, you will easily master these vocal techniques.

Do you need to develop your hearing to practice pop vocals?

If you have an undeveloped ear for music, you need to develop it regardless of what kind of vocal you are going to do: pop vocals, jazz vocals, folk vocals, academic vocals. We all understand that if we don’t hit the notes, we can’t repeat the melody exactly, then singing won’t work.

If you study vocals for yourself, or want to sing karaoke, then you do not have to take a whole solfeggio course (mastering musical literacy). Simply vocal solfeggio is enough, with the help of which you will develop stable coordination between hearing and voice.

How pop vocal lessons are structured

The main stage of learning pop vocals is mastering vocal breathing (see the article Breathing) and developing the voice (see the article Voice Development). If you want to learn to sing, then you should not skip this very important stage of learning pop vocals. During a pop vocal lesson, a professional vocal teacher will train your breathing and voice. After mastering the fundamental principles of pop singing in our vocal lessons, you begin to learn the repertoire that you would like to sing and which will help you in mastering the technique of pop singing: pop songs of rock, pop and other genres, romances, songs from films and cartoons. Working with a microphone in pop vocal lessons

We advise you to start working with a microphone only after you have thoroughly mastered the basic principles of singing: voice production and breathing. If you can sing without a microphone with a strong, bright and free voice without getting tired, then with a microphone it will not be difficult for you to sing at all, because it makes the singing process easier. Pop vocals

Pop vocals are a well-known type of pop singing, which includes a huge number of varieties of songs: folk singing, jazz, art songs, rock music. This direction includes a whole range of vocal skills. This type of vocal is primarily intended for singing on the stage, and the name pop vocal itself is often associated with popular and easy music.

Pop vocals, in comparison with classical vocals, are more characterized by such sound qualities as naturalness and accessibility.

Jazz vocals

Great demands are placed on a jazz vocalist - an ideal sense of proportionality and rhythm, as well as excellent maneuverability of the vocal apparatus and skills for instant improvisation.

When performing, you need the ability to convey your perception of the theme and melody, the ability to change it, without depriving the original harmony. Collaborative partnerships with musicians are also important here.

Rock vocals

Rock vocals are typically the job of a vocalist in a rock band. Rock vocals, unlike jazz singing, have a more emotional message. The main task of the performer becomes rather the semantic load of the work, and the vocal one fades somewhat into the background. However, despite this, a rock vocalist must have sufficient singing skills. What is required from him is additional emotional fervor, and absolute freedom with a dose of musical swagger.

Academic vocals

Academic vocals are an established traditional vocal style. Academicians perform in opera, with the participation of a symphony orchestra, and, of course, in the chamber vocal genre. A distinctive feature of academic vocals in comparison with others is its demanding classical views. Academic vocals have their own foundations and traditions, acquired through many years of experience and the history of vocal music. These regulations usually do not allow an academic performer to sing in other vocal genres. With experience, such a singer develops a specific vocal position, the voice acquires considerable strength and significant volume. However, with rare exceptions, academic vocalists can sing in other vocal genres if they make the presentation easier.

Voice training is the use of vocal techniques in practical life. Mastering the breathing technique is necessary for any singer. First of all, the correct operation of the diaphragm is important, as this affects correct vocal breathing and sound delivery. Vocals are a type of musical performance, the mastery of a singing voice. Vocals are divided into different types depending on their style, the techniques used, as well as the nature of the interaction between the performers.

Variety of vocal techniques

Depending on how many people and how exactly they participate in the vocal performance of the work, the following types of vocals are divided into:

  • solo singing (single);
  • ensemble singing (from two to 10 people, usually performing different parts);
  • choral singing (from 5-7 to several dozen people, some of whom lead identical parts).

As for the classification of vocals depending on the style and technique of performance, 11 main directions can be distinguished.

Basic Vocal Styles

Classical (academic) singing

Typical for opera and operetta, musicals, romances. The traditions of this direction were laid back in the 16th century - from that time to the present day, classical performance implies a high vocal position and a high dome, the maximum volumetric sound of an impeccably clear voice. Forced sound, noise and wheezing are completely or partially eliminated.

Jazz vocals

As a result of the fusion of colorful African rhythms and musical traditions inherent in European countries, this style appeared at the end of the 19th century in the USA. He is characterized by a rich and strong voice, capable of producing very rich sounds, varying tones, using imitation techniques and maximum improvisation.

Pop singing

This direction is distinguished by its focus on the mass consumer. Hence - texts that are clear in meaning without any deep philosophy, a simple and memorable manner of performance, and the use of repeated verses. Today, pop vocals are closely intertwined with other styles - rap, folk, rock, etc.

Folk singing

It is impossible to accurately describe what vocals of this direction are, since each specific manifestation of ethnic singing is something special. However, it can be said that in most cases the genre is characterized by vocal chords and a flat palate.

A separate niche of folk performance includes throat singing, which involves the masterful use of the capabilities of not only the ligaments, but also the throat itself. A striking example is the tradition of throat singing in Irish culture.

Genres of African American culture

  • Rap. A very rhythmically consistent recitative, which is played to a music track with a heavy beat.
  • Hip-hop. Combining rap with a DJ-dictated musical rhythm.
  • Contemporary rhythm and blues (“R&B”). This is a soft and lush performance against the backdrop of smooth electronic rhythms. A significantly more delicate, lyrical genre than previous vocal techniques.
  • Soul. As the name of the genre suggests (from the English “soul” - soul), this vocal style involves a very heartfelt emotional performance of the compositions. For this purpose, the best techniques of jazz singing and spirituals (spiritual songs of African Americans) are used.

Extreme Vocals

  • Growling. A very unusual style, which is based on a peculiar imitation of an animal roar. It also requires very strong technical training.
  • Screaming. An equally striking genre, expressed in a shrill or hoarse scream. It requires a very high tessitura, and therefore is more typical for male vocalists.

The concept of pop vocals as an independent genre appeared relatively recently. This genre as such arose with the advent of urban culture. What are the features of pop vocals?

There are several features of pop vocals that distinguish it from classical or academic vocals or from folk vocals.

Firstly, talking about the technique of pop vocals is quite difficult, because in pop vocals there are no canons and strict technical frameworks or rules for voice production. The same cannot be said about either . So everything is built on clearly formed techniques and techniques that need to be followed. But pop vocals, in turn, are a symbiosis of different vocal genres: in pop vocals one can find features of different musical vocal genres (although the chants for pop vocals are absolutely no different from the chants of classical singers). There are no restrictions here. On the one hand, this expands the capabilities of the vocalist, on the other hand, it also creates difficulties - after all, it turns out that the pop singer must have an understanding of all techniques in order to have as many opportunities as possible to convey all the musical colors of the work.

Secondly, if in academic and folk music, as we have already said, there are canons and a certain style of singing, then in pop vocals, the performer must find his own individual style, find “his” voice and his own presentation of the material. This is also the difficulty. An entertainer must discover something unique in his performance in order to be interesting and original to listeners.

Thirdly, the very form of works for the stage is very different from classical or folk music. A pop song has a simple musical form, most often a verse. The memorable form and frequently repeated motif are easily and simply perceived by ear and are very popular among wide audiences of listeners.

Another difference between pop music is the style of singing, which is based largely on spoken language, without singing all the words, as is customary in academic singing. There are very fine lines here in mixing different vocal styles, which are often very difficult to perform from a technical point of view. For example, in the bel canto operatic technique there are no frequent sharp leaps and rapid changes in singing registers, which can be found in the pop technique. In order to master this technique so that the switching of registers is imperceptible, you need to practice just as much, so you should not think that pop vocals are easy.

Thus, we can conclude that, on the one hand, pop vocals seem to be inferior in terms of complexity of mastery and are technically simpler, since they are designed for a more accessible perception for listeners, and at the same time simplicity, on the other hand, this is so the so-called simplicity is only apparent, because the performer must be able to control his voice in the same way as a classical singer, and in the same way must study and master the technique of singing for a long time. And how to use our skills and talent is the choice of each of us, it’s a matter of taste.

Pop vocals are a collective term that includes a huge variety of genres and styles, mainly song styles from blues and rock and roll to the current Chaotic and TranceCore. Often pop music was called “light” (even in the case of hard and heavy), but in our case this is not so. Stevie Wonder's vocals and his music cannot be called light.

There are significant differences between pop vocals and classical (academic):

  • Firstly, pop vocals include not only the technical techniques of classical and folk vocals, but also specific techniques unique to them;
  • Secondly, the goals and objectives of a pop vocalist are the search for “his” unique sound, the revelation of unique personal vocals, the definition of an original, perhaps even unique, style of singing in order to most effectively convey the main idea of ​​the song to the listener;
  • Thirdly, this type of vocal requires clear diction capable of conveying the meaning of the words of the song, as well as the ability to quickly change the rhythm of breathing and “sing” complex phrases;

Basic techniques of pop vocals:

  • Split;
  • Drive (growling, roaring, hoarse voice, death vocals, etc.);
  • Overtone (“throat”) singing;
  • Subtone;
  • Glissando (“slide”);
  • Falsetto;
  • Yodel (“Tyrolean singing”);
  • Strobas;
