Business Informatics
Business Informatics is the science of design, development and application of information and communication systems in business. The specialty involves training in disciplines related to information technology, computer science, economics and management concepts. Business informatics originated in Germany and is now successfully taught in Central Europe and the USA, as well as in Russia in bachelor's, master's and specialist programs.
An interdisciplinary approach is used in the learning process. Students study subjects from different fields. The main areas are information management, economics, computer science and fundamentals of mathematics and statistics. Students apply theoretical knowledge acquired in lectures in exercises at seminars and practical classes in programming and design.
Applied computer science in economics covers the planning, design, implementation, operation and development of information and communication systems that are used to support ongoing business activities, strategic planning and decision-making in business and public administration. Graduates work as information systems implementers, information systems support managers, programmers, business analysts, etc.

Today, a huge number of questions have increased regarding what business informatics is, who to work with and why it is interesting? If we start with a description of this area, then we can say with confidence that business informatics is one of the youngest specialties related to the field of higher education. Undoubtedly, such a profession directly affects a very promising sector of modern activity. The specialty was formed against the backdrop of management development, progress in the field of economics and due to the widespread use of information and communication technologies by the public.
From the very beginning, it is necessary to understand who business informatics work, how they work, and what they do? It is worth, first of all, paying attention to the material being studied in this specialty. At the beginning of training, which implies the initial stage of preparation, the greatest attention is paid to the natural sciences and other disciplines that lay the foundations in the field of information technology. In particular, the training course is closely related to such subjects as:
In addition to the above, initial education includes general mathematical disciplines. Among the required subjects, students will meet:
Then the question comes down to the economic environment. Training for a future profession involves studying and conducting financial and management accounting, basic economic theories and many other subjects related to the humanities.
In principle, what the profession of business informatics means and who to work with later is already becoming clear. However, that's not all. In the third and fourth years, training will go deeper into such areas of special disciplines as:
Of course, the classes that students receive in the early stages remain basic and differ mainly in that they relate to the theory of the subject. However, much attention in training is paid to the methodological process, which is directly related to the implementation of enterprise automation, to the design, implementation and further operation of information systems. As for the latter, students will have the opportunity to learn how to develop and operate information systems, as well as how to manage and organize an information and communications technology service.
Practice in the field of business informatics largely depends on trainings that allow you to master all kinds of tools, programs and systems, which in turn will allow you to put into practice the knowledge acquired during the study of the theoretical basis. This includes Delphi, MS Project, Dot net and much more.
Where can bachelors majoring in business informatics work? Specialists who have received this degree have the right to work as part of the executive working group. In addition, they can work as managers of various service departments and similar systems. In fact, a bachelor of business informatics is a professional worker who can design, create, implement corporate information systems, as well as carry out analysis and the necessary support.
Speaking about the types of professional activities, it is worth noting that according to statistics and expert assessments, the Russian market currently needs more than 150,000 lawyers, economists and managers who would be directly related to information and communication technologies, while the above-mentioned needs for specialists of similar profile is currently only partial. For Russia this is approximately 10,000 people annually. With such a growth rate of vacancies and employees, we can confidently assume that business informatics specialists will be needed for a long time and in many areas of activity at once.
In addition, it is worth noting that broader prospects open up for bachelors of business informatics, in particular, work in the profession abroad, since according to the Bologna Declaration, the diploma obtained will be valid for an unlimited time and in any country that is a participant in this process. This is just some information that allows you to understand what a wide and sought-after range of activities the specialty of business informatics brings with it. Where to work later is up to you to decide!
In my opinion, the main thing I learned at university was to study. This skill is the most critical in the IT field. Without constant self-education, knowledge and skills depreciate within a very short cycle. The Department of PIiMME provided basic knowledge and concepts of system analysis, economic subject area, database design, and domestic business applications.

Since childhood, I have been a versatile person and I was equally attracted to both humanities and technical disciplines. Therefore, I chose the direction of bachelor's training in "Business Informatics" because... it includes many subjects in economics and computer science. I am very pleased with my choice and my education is fully consistent with the work I am currently doing.
VolSU is an excellent place for young and talented people; here you can realize your creative and leadership qualities by participating in active student life. The university provides an opportunity to make friends in various professional fields, which will certainly be useful in the future. Education here is provided at a truly high level and with the knowledge gained you can successfully speak at scientific conferences and seminars throughout the country.
The field of study “Business Informatics” has a broad focus, and from the first day of training I was sure that there would be no problems with further employment. After two years of studying at the university, I decided on the areas that attract me and formed for myself an approximate list of professions that are interesting to me. Subsequently, every year this list was reduced and by the end of my studies I clearly knew who I wanted to work with.
Try to identify your strengths, weaknesses and interests for finishing school and go in the direction that really interests you. Any person, if he really loves his job, will achieve success regardless of whether his degree is in a prestigious field or not. But if you choose a business you like, which is also highly valued in the labor market, then it will be much easier for you on your life’s path.

How complex/interesting/exhaustive can training in this area be considered?
When choosing a future profession, in my opinion, the main thing is not to make a mistake. If you doubt it, imagine yourself in 10 years. Who would you like to work as? And not just work, but get a lot of pleasure from the process. When I entered VolSU in 2011, I had a huge choice of majors to choose from. However, the choice fell on the direction of bachelor’s training “Business Informatics”, which I have never regretted.

At school I felt a great attraction to computer science, however, I did not attach much importance to it and by the end of 11th grade I was choosing between a manager and a programmer. I couldn't get into programmer because the passing grades didn't allow me to pass. As a result, I chose a middle course between economics and computer science and entered the Business Informatics major. Yes, I am satisfied with my choice and do not regret that I did not choose some other direction.
Studying in the field of “Business Informatics” actually looks very simple if you have a thirst for knowledge and a passion for the process of learning new things. Most disciplines are accompanied by practical assignments and laboratory work, which play a big role in consolidating the theory. There were, of course, complex disciplines that required more effort to study.
I imagined my future profession as complex, responsible and important. The knowledge gained was very useful when finding a job, but, of course, not all of it. Without the theoretical basis that is given at the university, it is very difficult to work. Many of the subjects I studied that I thought were unnecessary ended up being useful, and I believe that no matter what knowledge is, it will always come in handy.
In my opinion, choosing a profession is a very important point that you need to stop and think about for at least a year or two, otherwise, otherwise, you will not be interested in studying and you will waste your time. If you can’t decide where to go or what to choose, think about what you’re best at doing, what you want to do, what you have the ability to do, or what your loved ones advise you to do. There is no need to be afraid of the unknown, in which case you are only limiting yourself in your capabilities. To make your choice, google reviews, look at the training program in this area, read which disciplines are included in the standard of study for this area and determine how interesting they are to you.

The path to a diploma cannot be called thorny. It’s only difficult at first and only because you’re not used to it. But when you get the hang of it, almost every item seems interesting. And when preparing coursework and scientific papers, you can discover comprehensive knowledge on your favorite subjects. There are many interesting practical tasks: working with files, databases, data directly, different programming languages - you won’t get bored with it.
The core subject when entering a university to major in computer science is mathematics, as well as physics and ICT. On average in Russia, for admission it is enough to score in these subjects and the Russian language on the EGE from 35 to 80 points. The passing score depends on the prestige of the educational institution and the competition within it. Sometimes, at the discretion of the university, knowledge of foreign languages may be required for admission.
The most modern, progressive and promising direction in the study of IT is applied computer science. This is an innovative direction that involves a creative approach during subsequent work in the specialty “applied computer science”.
The code of the specialty "Applied Informatics" is 03/09/03. It is also called computer science ICT. The specialty is studied at many faculties - economics, law, management and education, as an additional subject. The specialty involves the study of programming languages and foreign languages, but the emphasis is on the practical application of these skills in various information systems.
According to the classifier "Business Informatics" the code is 38.03.05. This specialty is quite new and appeared only in 2009. Accordingly, when choosing the specialty “business informatics”, who to work for a student is an important question. Business informatics allows you to obtain qualifications as a designer, optimizer and administrator of systems and processes of business programs.
In order for a student to be able to obtain a specialty in business informatics, universities teach how to conduct analytics, plan and organize IT projects of various levels of complexity. In addition to logical thinking and a technical mindset, students in the direction of 03.38.05 are required to have analytical skills, communication skills and leadership skills.
Under the code 09.03.01 in the classification is the specialty "Informatics and Computer Science". Everyone decides who to work with such qualifications for themselves, based on the acquired knowledge in the areas of software development, IT design and information security. During the training period, students master high-level programming languages, and OS and local network administration skills.
Training in the direction of 03/09/01 takes 4 years. Despite the relatively short training period, the field of “Informatics and Computer Science” is considered one of the most difficult, since it involves acquiring skills for developing programs and algorithms.
Applied computer science with an emphasis on economics is a subsection of “Mathematical support and administration of information systems” 03/02/03 for bachelor’s degrees and 04/02/03 for master’s degrees. Computer science with the additional specialty of “economist” allows you to create, implement and maintain software in the field of economics, analyzing its operation and algorithms.
A student who has received an education in the field of “applied computer science in economics” is able to solve functional problems and operate financial and material flows using special software.
Applied mathematics and computer science is a specialty in universities according to code 01.03.02 in bachelor’s programs and according to code 01.04.02 in master’s programs. In contrast to narrow specialists in the fields of economics, education and law, “Mathematics and Computer Science” allows you to apply the acquired skills in any work that involves the use of software, ICT, communication networks and systems, and conducting mathematical calculations. The student will be able to apply the acquired skills in analytical, scientific, design and technological fields.
At the department of "Informatics and Control Systems" the directions of the section "Informatics and Computer Science" are studied 09.00.00. Students gain skills in the areas of 3D modeling, WEB development, information security technology, design of intelligent control systems and development of microprocessor systems.
The Department of Computer Science and Statistics allows students to obtain qualifications in the specialties of the Information Security section 10.00.00. The department teaches special disciplines that are aimed at ensuring information security in specialties 10.05.01-05 and interaction with relevant software.
The bachelor's level specialty in the direction 02.03.02 "Fundamental computer science and information technology" is aimed at system mathematical programming, information processing and management of communication systems. In addition to programming, the student gains knowledge in the areas of design and sound processing, and can manage telecommunications objects.
There are more than 50 universities in Russia that offer training to students in computer science fields.
At Russian institutes you can gain skills to work as a programmer, developer, information systems engineer, designer, and administrator of local and WEB networks. The specialty of computer science teacher is also being studied at universities at the master's level, in the areas of 04/02/01 and 04/09/02.
The specialty “applied computer science” at the college was not included in the list of specialty codes from 2015. Training in applied computer science on the basis of a diploma gives graduates the right to obtain the qualification “Programmer Technician” without passing the Unified State Exam. The training lasts 3-4 years and opens up opportunities to work in any enterprise as a programmer.
One of the most popular technical specialties nowadays is computer science. Therefore, many graduates who receive high scores in mathematics choose the IT field. Specialties related to computer science can be divided into fundamental, applied and additional.
Depending on the choice, the student learns to interact with various systems at stages from development to administration and practical use in various computing areas.

The imperfection of modern information technologies, characteristic of everything new and rapidly developing, requires a fairly high level of training in this area. There are many examples when projects of ready-made or custom-developed Corporate Information Systems end in failure at the implementation and operation stages. The main reason for such failures is the lack of specialists who organically combine knowledge in technology, economics, management and information technology.
The processes of globalization of the world, determined to a large extent by the rapid development of information technology (IT), dictate new rules for doing business and new approaches to organizing and managing production. Telecommunications, communications and information processing have reached a level where the management of individual enterprises and entire industrial sectors has become possible from the position of managing a single “living organism”. Enterprise information systems have become corporate information systems (CIS) and provide “transparency” in the conduct of company affairs at all levels of management. The presence of CIS in companies makes it possible to quickly respond to changes in external and internal business conditions, increases its profitability in comparison with generally accepted traditional approaches, and makes an “informatized company” attractive for investment. In addition, we must not forget about the need for integration into the global market, which is impossible without a Quality Management System in accordance with ISO 9000 standards.
Today in Russia there are about 60 areas of professional training in the field of IT and more than 50 in the field of economics and management. But, as practice has shown, none of them is capable of generating synthetic knowledge at the intersection of these areas. Attempts to “mechanically” introduce missing disciplines into traditional university departments of professional training, as a rule, end in failure. As a result, society receives either specialists with shallow knowledge in IT and completely superficial knowledge in management and economics, or with shallow knowledge in management and economics and completely superficial knowledge in IT. As Kozma Prutkov wrote: “A specialist is like gumboil. Its completeness is one-sided.”
Thus, the modern information society requires specialists with complex, specially formed and organically combined knowledge of economics, management and law, mastering the theoretical foundations and practical skills of analytical decision support, conceptual design of corporate information systems, management of IT design and implementation. Modern society requires information systems specialists - Business Software Applications Specialist.
It is the synthesis of knowledge at the intersection of various subject areas that determines the unity of the words “Business” and “Informatics” in the name of the new educational direction of the Department of Information Systems at South Ural State University. And the task of this department is to eliminate this “flux” according to K. Prutkov.
State standards and training programs for business informatics are new not only for Russian higher education. They have no analogues in the Western system of higher professional training, where graduates of IT specialties master economic disciplines and the basics of management, as a rule, at the stage of receiving additional education in specialized schools. Foreign and domestic industry leaders have officially announced their support for this educational direction: Microsoft, IBS, IBM, SAP, Computer Association, Lanit, Krok, 1C, InterSoft Lab.
The educational and methodological association, headed by the Faculty of Business Informatics of the State University Higher School of Economics, has already entered into partnership agreements with these companies. And this is no coincidence.
The qualifications of a business informatics specialist allow him to plan, manage and coordinate activities in the field of creation, implementation and operation of corporate information systems, and allows him to competently solve the following tasks:
The objects of professional activity of business informatics are:
tools for documenting, describing, analyzing and modeling information and communication processes in information systems;
The organization of the educational process in this educational direction complies with the principles of the Bologna process, to which Russia became a participant in 2003. The educational process is structured according to the 4+2 scheme:
At the first stage of higher education, the fundamental knowledge of a specialist is ensured, and in a two-year master's program, functional-oriented training is carried out. In the junior courses of the first stage of preparation, the main focus is on natural sciences, basic training in the field of information technology (computer science and programming, databases, information systems design), general mathematical disciplines (mathematical analysis, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, probability theory and mathematical statistics) , economic (economic theory, financial and management accounting) and humanitarian disciplines. Special disciplines, such as logistics, personnel management, strategic management, information law, modeling and optimization of business processes, architecture of corporate information systems, software life cycle management, information security, etc., appear in the third and fourth years.
The knowledge and skills acquired at the first stage are basic and therefore more theoretically oriented. These are methodologies related to preparing an enterprise for automation, design, implementation of information systems, organization of IT services, management and operation of information systems and development management. The acquisition of practical work skills is limited to training to master various tools and systems that support theoretical courses, for example, MS Project, CASE technologies, Aris, Borland Builder C++ and Delphi, FrameWork and Dot net, etc. Specialists who have received a bachelor's degree are prepared to work as part of a group of performers, as well as as managers of services and systems.
The functionally oriented second stage of training aims to in-depth study of practical business problems, the formation of practical skills in analytical, advisory, research or scientific and pedagogical activities. Unlike the first degree, the educational process in the master's program is based on the practical work of students in the staff of IT companies, supported by full-time in-depth individual theoretical training at the university. Master's students expand their range of economic and management disciplines and deepen their knowledge in accordance with the chosen area of specialization of the IT company:
A master's degree graduate is prepared to manage a group of performers, an IT department, and can perform the functions of a top manager in organizing and managing an IT business.
More recently, the personnel shortage of leaders in the IT industry and industrial companies was met by repurchasing qualified personnel from one company to another. But now prices have risen, and there is no one left to buy. And organizing an in-house training system for preparing and retraining specialists requires too many costs, too much money needs to be invested in its development. According to domestic and foreign experts, the Russian labor market alone today requires about 150 thousand lawyers, “managers” and economists, and up to 10% of this business is directly related to information technology. Business informatics specialists are in demand in all areas of business that use information and communication technologies. Today, the unmet need for specialists of this profile is about 10 thousand people per year in Russia alone. In addition, in accordance with the Bologna Declaration, a diploma from any country participating in the process is valid without restrictions in all participating countries; not only the domestic but also the foreign information technology labor market is opened for bachelors and masters of Business Informatics.
