Avril Lavigne and Derek Whibley - a love story, unfortunately, was short-lived... Derick Whibley: life after alcoholism Derick Jason Whibley disease

23.06.2019

Derick Whibley has struggled with alcoholism for the past few years. In mid-2013, the Sum 41 frontman shocked the public after he appeared on one of the social events, transformed beyond recognition.

After this, Whibley again did not appear in public for a long time. As it turned out, the musician’s problems with alcohol continued all this time. A few weeks ago, Derick ended up in the hospital, where he lay unconscious for several weeks. As it turned out, due to many years of alcoholism, the 34-year-old musician began to have serious problems with his liver and kidneys.

The new photo of the rocker caused no less surprise than last year's photo.

"Hi all! I just wanted to thank everyone for the gifts and all the support you give me. This is all very important to me. Especially during recovery. I'll get better very soon. And I’ll be back on stage even sooner than you imagine. See you soon,” Derick Whibley wrote on his official website.

We also note that the doctors seriously threatened the frontman of Sum 41 - if the musician drinks alcohol even once more, he will simply die.

Whibley and Cooper's wedding took place at the Bel Air Hotel in Los Angeles in the presence of 100 guests. Despite the classic concept of the holiday, there were some rocker notes close to Deryk. For example, along with a chic bustier dress, the bride wore Converse sneakers, the cake was “painted” in black and white color, but the songs of Sum 41 were never played in the hall.

The ceremony was very intimate and family-like. At their wedding violinists played classical music, which is fundamentally different from the rock that Derik’s group performs. He was amazing

A source told People magazine. The main drink of the wedding was apple cider, since Whibley absolutely cannot “get involved” with alcohol. In 2014, he fell into a coma due to liver and kidney problems caused by prolonged alcoholism:

I drank heavily every day. Until that fateful night. I was sitting at home and pouring myself another drink, I wanted to watch a movie. Then I suddenly became ill, I fell and could not get up. My girlfriend called an ambulance and I was admitted to the intensive care unit. When I woke up, the doctors said that if I touched alcohol again, I would die.

Popular rock singer Avril Lavigne has decided to leave her husband Derick Whibley. The couple met 6 years ago, when the girl was 17 years old. After 3 years, Derick proposed to her and Avril, without hesitation, agreed. However, this marriage did not bring happiness to any of them: very soon the singer realized that Derick Whibley was not the person she wanted to see next to her, and filed for divorce.

This act of Avril came as a complete surprise to her husband, who was shocked and very upset by Lavigne’s decision. According to Derik, they planned to have a child soon and nothing could foreshadow this scandalous divorce. Even though in Lately the girl behaved strangely and often preferred to spend time alone. Whibley hoped that the cause of his wife’s apathy and depression was overwork and problems at work.

Commenting on this situation, Avril herself said that she just wants to move forward, despite all the difficulties that accompany her today. She wants to develop both in terms of her career and personal qualities. Derik, on the contrary, “constantly pulled her to the bottom” and was content with what he had. Ambition and a strong character Lavigne was not allowed to fold her arms and stop there. Her marriage to Whibley, “like a swamp,” sucked her deeper and deeper every day, and in the end, the singer packed up her husband’s things and kicked him out the door.

Derick Whibley himself prefers not to talk about his personal life and does not comment on his divorce from the rock singer. After three years together, he still loves Avril and was sincerely surprised by her decision to separate. However, Lavigne is not ready to take her husband back and, judging by her optimistic mood, does not intend to. But once upon a time this couple looked quite happy.

“Irreconcilable differences” is the reason most often cited in celebrity divorce papers. What is actually hidden under this phrase is known only to them, but we would like there to be as few star scams as possible. It’s no secret that even those who have been married for 20 years have disagreements, but not everyone knows how to reconcile with them.

In May 2014, when frontman of the Canadian punk rock band Sum 41 and Avril Lavigne's ex-husband Derick Whibley emerged from a coma, the first person he saw was his mother.

"I knew something really bad had happened because she lives in Toronto," the singer said. - “And I guessed that it was something associated with drinking. When I came to my senses, the doctor explained that my kidneys and liver had failed due to drinking, and he didn’t know whether they could save me or not. I have already been pumped out in intensive care five times. He said: “Boy, you can die.”

“I used to think like this: well, I work so hard, I can afford to rest hard, how else can I relax? It was normal to drink every evening. And a little more, before going on stage, because who performs sober? I don’t I’ve been dry since I was 17. We toured a lot, partied a lot, I drank every day, didn’t do anything sober, even this. ordinary thing, like a telephone call, required a preliminary glass or two. I spent a lot of money on alcohol, $1,500 a week to be exact."

“Recently, I began to get drunk very quickly and often vomited. Even the smell of strawberries made me sick, but I still drank a bottle of vodka every day, which was brought straight to my home. One evening I decided to have a drink and watch a movie. I drank, fell, and lost consciousness , and woke up a week later - in a hospital room. If my girlfriend had not been nearby, who immediately called an ambulance, I would have died within an hour. The doctors put me in an artificial coma so that withdrawal would not finish me off. I vomited blood and survived thanks to a miracle. The doctor said that one more drink and I was definitely done for.

My legs were the worst: due to severe nerve damage, it hurt even just to touch them, let alone walk. They seemed to be on fire. It's like walking on hot coals."

After a month of uncertainty and endless agony, Whibley slowly began to recover and was soon allowed to go home. But in his first year sober, he couldn't stand on his feet for more than three seconds.

Now that I'm sober, my drinking buddies don't call me anymore. I became uninteresting and useless to them.
Who wants to invite a sober guy to a party? The first thing I did when I was sober was to sharply reduce my inner circle. Cut out those who shouldn't be around. Do you know who showed incredible care for me? Iggy Pop. He gave me a lot practical advice, he himself once went through all this.

“And also Tommy Lee, the leader of the band Motley Crue. Tommy told me what to expect from people now, explained that not everyone would understand me. Duff McKagan and Matt Soram from Guns"n"Roses also supported me well. We were just meeting, drinking coffee and chatted about all sorts of nonsense. And, of course, I am very grateful to my fans who sent me flowers, letters, gifts, wrote words of support. Music helps me a lot - I write a lot now. It’s hard for my fingers, they don’t listen to me, I’m like. “It’s like I’m learning to play the guitar again, but this situation has inspired me to write new songs and I can’t wait to go on stage again.”

Avril Lavigne supported her ex-wife on Twitter:
Today I talked with Derik. I'm so proud of him. He is a member of my family and will always remain so. #BeStrongDerik

"Now I'm going through a kind of training, because I don't know what it's like to live completely without alcohol. And I I don’t know myself at all - I’ve never met this person. Between the ages of 17 and 34, I didn't have many sober days, you know."

Despite what happened, Whibley says he has no regrets: “It was the best thing that ever happened to me. I'm glad I went through these difficulties because they made me a better person. I like my sober life. I'm not preaching anything, but if you guys drink, at least do it responsibly. Personally, I can’t, I see where it got me.”

A year after the incident, Derek married his girlfriend Ariana Cooper - the girl who called an ambulance on that fateful evening and remained by his side during rehabilitation - Ariana also had problems with alcohol and quit drinking with Derick.

I'm glad it happened now that I'm 35 and not 50! Then my body would almost certainly not have coped. However, today I feel better than ever. Much healthier. I'm in my in better shape. And I became more productive. Well, I've always been pretty productive - such a well-functioning alcoholic.

I can’t even imagine wanting to use again. If I hadn't literally drunk myself to death, I might still feel like I'm losing something, but I'm not losing anything. It's finished. I've definitely had enough, especially since it hasn't been much fun lately.
